winter to do list

I initially had pages set up to put research and photos in. Well its winter and time to activate these pages, so I will begin with research.  This template has limitations and I'm not starting from scratch so have fun scrolling down as I add things.
Somehow it became January 2013 and I am briefly motivated to put some photos on of Saint Mary's
Anglican church.

Museum dinner a success

Well we had about 45 people for our Christmas supper, a bit crowded but a great opportunity for conversation. Thank you to Bernice for the turkey and cabbage roll supper, just wonderful. Finn gave us a 150 slide presentation out of the 10,000 the Saskatchewan history and folklore  society have of Mr. Baker's work. How do you choose?

upcoming museum christmas dinner

I am looking forward to the Museum's Christmas dinner 6:00 p.m. Nov. 28 at the Plus 50. It is a time for museum members, volunteers and Board to enjoy each others accomplishments and look forward to the next year of activities. This year we appear to be needing to add more tables so regardless of the weather we will all be warm. Turkey and cabbage rolls are on the menu. I am especially looking forward to Finn Anderson of the Saskatchewan History and Folklore Society coming with a special slide presentation of some of Everett Baker's photos from the 40's and 50's. Mr. Baker was the first president of the Saskatchewan History and Folklore Society. He worked for the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool as a field man and in his travels across the province documented through photography the everyday lives of people. He in essence gave us a valuable incite into the social, natural and historical development of this province between 1935 -1957. If you would like to see some of his work check out their website.

museum brochure

Once you are retired deadlines take on a whole new meaning. I am trying to learn to relax and pull back on my type A personality. I tell myself I have lots of time and it can wait, then an opportunity arises and the type A personality comes right back into action. I saw a lovely museum brochure from the Lumsden museum and thought I must figure out how to do that one day. I was at a workshop in Saskatoon and was talking to a fellow from a museum in Prince Albert and he said there are free 30 day trial templates on line. I thought that's nice I must do that one day. I had committed myself to putting together a museum display for the Cupar Trade show and was told by a friend that it was important to have something to give people, like a brochure. Rats! I just hit a deadline. Well after 2 days of swearing I had that brochure. Thought I would share it with all of you.

I leave it to you to fold it in your mind.

Cupar Trade Show Nov 3-4

Thought it might be good promotion for the Cupar museum to have a booth at the trade show. The trade show was organized not only to highlight local businesses, but as a community fundraiser to assist with repairs and refurbishing of the Legion / Library building.

First problem : What do you mean we need a brochure? Found a 30 day free trial brochure template and 2 days of frustration later I had one made.

The trade show really is for selling items so once I explained the butter boxes were not for sale, and started drawing people in to the display it got to be real fun. People really enjoyed browsing through the albums and trying to find the location of their family farm on the 1914 map. Some of the people had been to the museum before but did not realize the variety of things that are there.

Special thank you to Warrior Stones who donated necklaces and bookmarks to the museum for sale.

We raised $115.

   

Canadian Conservation Institute Workshop

Canadian Conservation Institute Care of Photographic Materials Workshop was held Oct 18-19 in Saskatoon at the WDM. What a wealth of information was presented with the bonus of additional website information and books to explore as participants time permits.

Okay it's either dots, fibre or crystals.

 

I think my head is going to explode.

 Really enjoyed the tour through the archival center.  I've never seen full sized cars stored on shelves.

Thanks to the Allan Museum for the magic lantern presentation after the workshop.

Qu'Appelle Valley Network

6 months ago I did not know there were museum networks. Well I ended up at the Qu'Appelle Valley Network meeting in Abernethy, Oct. 13, a short drive of 80km. Wonderful museum and people. I am really excited about the Cupar museum being part of this network. 

Received lots of information and ideas to take back to my board. 

 Minor panic, dates to remember: 2014 is the 100^th anniversary of start of WWI. Barely enough time to start planning. 2017 is the 150^th anniversary of confederation. Note to self: start thinking about local activities that were happening in Cupar in 1967. Saskatchewan Archeological Society is doing an archeological caravan for member museums in the Qu'Appelle Valley Network for 2013. Great idea, must move that up the priority list.

1940 chevy truck

A Chevy Truck assembled at the GM plant in Regina in 1940 was donated to our museum a few years back. It is indeed one of our prize possessions. It is at this time in running order. The next step in it's restoration has just begun. The truck was driven out of it's work space and delivered to the shop of a volunteer who will complete the necessary body work, reassemble the exterior, and give it a fresh paint job. The truck will be a feature of the museum in parades and other activities in the area we hope for many years to come.

Harvest Lunch Success

 It was a gorgeous hot sunny day. Most of the harvest was done and the Legion Hall was packed. We ran out of pies, we scraped the bottom of the soup pots and enjoyed each others company. A huge thank you to the volunteers who baked bread and pies, and who made soup. Thank you to the workers who manned the tables, served our guests and cleared up. They seemed to be running continually. Thank you to the women who donated beautiful patchwork quilts to our Culture Day display in the Plus 50 Club. It would have been wonderful to show even more but space was limited. We are all exhausted but excited about next year.                             

 

Ernie Weisbrod

We were saddened to learn of the passing of Ernie Weisbrod this past week.  Ernie was a charter member of the Cupar and District Heritage Museum, a long time board member of the museum and a very active volunteer.  Ernie was proud of the museum and took every opportunity to show the museum to family, friends and guests.  We will miss him.


Ernie was born 12 Mar. 1922 and died 25 Sept. 2012
